Gauge Hatch provides tank access where manual level gauging. Temperature measurement or sampling is required. The foot pedal allows the operator to open the gauge whilst remaining hands free carry out required measurements.
Despite the wonders of modern instrumentation there are time when you really need to physically see or feel a process variable. A gauge hatch on the roof of the atmospheric tank provides you with the means of doing so.
As per API 2000, 4.4.2 ed.2009, gauge hatch can also act as an emergency pressure release if there is abnormal pressure inside the tank.

EMERGENCY RELIEF VENT
